![]() ![]() So, if things are going wrong, we should have a better ideology. ![]() Our era ‘wants to see itself as postideological but is in reality saturated by ideology’ (961). Piketty argues all societies use ideology to legitimise inequality this ‘dominant narrative’ leads to rules and rules entrench inequality (1). ‘So if you read only one, please read this one!’ Personally, I would read both: while Capital in the Twenty-First Century has a positive thesis that with our current laws, the rate of return to capital exceeds the rate of growth (r > g), Capital and Ideology builds a normative thesis, driven by this data, that we should adopt democratic or ‘participatory socialism’. ‘I think this is a much better book than the previous one,’ said Piketty, referring to Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2014). ![]() Thomas Piketty’s Capital and Ideologyis an encyclopaedic, rewarding work that merits thoughtful engagement. Thomas Piketty (translated by Arthur Goldhammer). This encyclopaedic, rewarding work merits thoughtful engagement and is essential reading, writes Ewan McGaughey. ![]() In Capital and Ideology, Thomas Piketty proposes a vision for a fairer economic system grounded in ‘participatory’ socialism. ![]() ![]() The top half is plain with the book's title the bottom half shows the silhouette of a man walking along a snowy street corner. Surkov, who was a close advisor of Putin for almost two decades, is one of the oprichniki who seems to have fallen from grace recently-although that may well be spin, too.Īn image of the book's front cover is shown. ![]() The opposite, rather: Most of the book, whose title translates into English as “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” is one long monologue by Baranov, who is modeled on Vladislav Surkov, Putin’s longtime spin doctor. It is not that the author, Giuliano da Empoli, a Swiss Italian political scientist who teaches at Sciences Po in Paris, has a lively imagination. ![]() The novel, which was published in French in April and in Italian at the end of June, is a must-read for anyone wondering what Russian President Vladimir Putin is up to and what the Russian people have had to go through during his tenure. ![]() “You can invent whatever you like-a proletarian revolution or unfettered liberalism-but the result is always the same: The oprichniki, the tsar’s elite watchdogs, are at the top.” “No one ever escapes his fate, and the fate of the Russians is that they are ruled by descendants of Ivan the Terrible,” says Vadim Baranov, the main character in Le mage du Kremlin, a novel that is all the rage in France and Italy this summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() The girl has reminded him of his own painful past in Europe. In the final story, "And of Clay are we Created," which is a conclusion of sorts, Eva Luna describes how her lover has been irrevocably changed by his failure to save a young girl caught in the muddy debris in the aftermath of an earthquake. These concern, among others, a socialist priest whose sight is restored by prayers to a local saint an exemplary schoolteacher who enlists the whole town in burying the body of the man she has decapitated because she recognized him as the long-ago killer of her only son and a peasant woman who sells words so powerful that they turn a murdering brigand into a law-abiding candidate for political office. Taking her cue from the creator of the story-chain genre, Eva Luna, like Scheherazade, responds to her lover Roll Carle's request for a story with two dozen tales of love, death, revenge, war, and politics. A collection of magical-realist short stories narrated by Allende's recent heroine, Eva Luna (Eva Luna, 1988 Of Love and Shadows, 1987 The House of Spirits, 1985), which are set in nameless Latin American countries, any time in the past, and peopled with characters who could be and probably are meant to be someone else. ![]() ![]() There is prairie grass and front porches and the sort of small town mentality that made me believe my earlier assessment of this as a whimsical read were correct. Maybe it was all of this combined and maybe all of this contributed towards a book that ended up being a little lackluster book in my opinion. Maybe it wasn't the right book to pick up right now, maybe it wasn't the right book for me altogether or maybe the synopsis wasn't immediately grabbing. The Last Days of Summer looked like a whimsical summer read, the premise seemed an interesting one and the cover was fairly attractive and yet I didn't feel compelled to read this one. Thank you to the author, Vanessa Roman, and the publisher, Penguin, for this opportunity. I received this book in exchange for an honest review on NetGalley. ![]() ![]() Born with a rare congenital condition called sacral agenesis which affects both her stature and gait, her pain is physical. With its setting in modern times, Ida Elisabeth examines the difficulties inherent in male-female relationships as they are experienced in contemporary society. As in Undset's other fiction, however, Ida Elisabeth poignantly illustrates how poor choices affect the course of a person's life and how the suffering endured because of grievous mistakes can become the means by which a love is purified. Unlike Undset's famous historical novels, which are set in medieval Norway, the story of Ida Elisabeth opens in 1930. As she contemplates marrying again, Frithjof, now gravely sick, re-enters her life. Still young, the admirably hardworking Ida attracts the attention of a successful lawyer, who possesses the manly virtues that her husband lacked. ![]() When Frithjof becomes involved with another woman, Ida Elisabeth leaves him and moves with her children to a small town. ![]() ![]() Early in their marriage, she realizes that her charming husband is incapable of supporting the family and she sews dresses to make ends meet.
